Collection Physical Description: This thesis focuses on painters rather than sculptors. The 'Appendix' in vol. 2 includes 'An Alphabetical List of Artists Not Included in Detail in the Main Text of the Thesis' (pp. 602-874). The appendix provides detailed biographical descriptions of the artists lives and works and bibliographical references: the appendix does not include information about local sculptors and they are not considered in the main body of the thesis. The thesis provides a detailed history of the Nottingham School of Art from its foundation to 1914, including an indepth study of its headmasters / assistant masters during this period and their careers as teachers and professional artists. It also provides a history of the Nottingham Society of Artists from its foundation to 1914, and of the Castle Gallery, Nottingham to c. 1910.
