Sculptor, designer
Born in Bedale, Yorkshire as George Slater. He was the son of William Slater, an inn keeper. George's mother died the year after he was born followed, in 1844, by his father. So George and five older siblings went to live with their sister, Jane Henson (Slater) Barkentin (1808-84) and her husband, the silversmith and silver chaser, Jes (James) Barkentin (c.1815-83 born in Haderslev, Denmark). George was raised by his sister and brother-in-law and later took Barkentin as his name. His uncle entered a business partnership with the gold and silversmith, Carl Krall (1844-1923).
George Slater studied at the Royal Academy Schools between 1859-61 and was awarded at least three medals during this time. Around 1868 he travelled to the United States to report on the American Civil War for a London newspaper. He returned to the UK on a number of occasions but from this date settled in America and raised a family. Barkentin died in Canton, Ohio following an operation to amputate a leg.
