Born in Finsbury. He was the son of William Wilson, victualler (grocer) of Chiswell Street, Finsbury. Around 1850 he was studying at the Royal Academy Schools and was awarded a silver medal. Wilson exhibited at the Royal Academy three times up to 1856, and described himself as an artist in his marriage banns of 1859. By 1891 living in Hastings 'on own means'.
