Samuel James Bouverie Haydon
Born 29 April 1816
Died 1891
Active: 1840 - 1881
Country of birth and death: England
Sculptor, medallist, painter
Born Exeter, Devon. Samuel originally trained as a lawyer but turned to sculpture in the late 1830s, and studied with Edward Hodges Baily. He also seems to have turned his hand to photography at an early stage because he was recommended as an experienced assistant to William Fox Talbot (1800-77) in 1845 by the artist Nicholas Condy (1793–1857).
Haydon married Mary Agnes Deane in 1848, and they named their oldest son Samuel Flaxman Haydon (born c.1841) after the sculptor, John Flaxman (1755-1826). Samuel continued to work for some years after he ceased exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1876. He retired between 1881-91 and died in Hammersmith, Fulham in the summer of 1891. There is a list of his known works in Roscoe (2009).
This entry includes information submitted to the project by Dr. Christopher Warren. There are transcriptions of correspondence between William Fox Talbot (1800-77) and his half-sister Lady Caroline Augusta Edgcumbe, née Feilding (1808- 2 Nov 1881) at http://foxtalbot.dmu.ac.uk/index.html (accessed 28 March 2012).
