Born in London. He was the son of Edmund Cotterill (1774-1815), spectacle maker who was awarded the Freedom of the City of London in 1807. Studied at the Royal Academy from 1820. From 1833 he was the head of the design studio which produced models for Robert Garrard, the royal goldsmiths.
