John Henning Jnr
Born 8 August 1802
Died 1873
Active: 1828 - 1871
Country of birth and death: Scotland
Sculptor, modeller, architectural sculptor
Born Paisley, Scotland. He was the son of the sculptor John Henning Snr (1771-1851) who was a self-taught Scottish modeller, renowned for his miniature copies of the Parthenon frieze. His brother was Samuel Henning, a gem engraver (d.1832).
John Henning Jnr was taught by his father and showed early talent. He collaborated with his father on many works including the reproduction of the Parthenon frieze for the exterior of the Athenaeum Club and reliefs for Decimus Burton’s screen at Hyde Park.
Henning Jnr completed a number of independent commissions, including the bas-reliefs for the Manchester Institution (1836-7), and a 'Homeric Table' for the library of Lord Northwick, which was exhibited at the publisher, Herning & Remington, Regent Street in 1850. This last comprised a heavily carved (or modelled) base, with a sepia drawing of Homeric subjects protected by plate glass, which formed the top of the table. The 'Art Journal' described it as a 'beautiful table' of an unusually 'classic and fitting composition' (Minor Topics of the Month, February 1850, p. 65).
Despite such successes, Henning Junior's practice does not appear to have been as successful (critically) as his father's. This may be because he suffered an extended illness, certainly by 1871 he was a patient in St John’s Hospital, City Road, Holborn, London. He died at Holborn, London in 1873 (death given as 1855 in Roscoe, 2009).
