Painter, sculptor
Paterson trained at the Glasgow School of Art and in Paris. He then travelled in France and Italy before returning to Glasgow. Paterson is often linked to the group known as the 'Glasgow Boys' although he was primarily a landscape artist rather than a figure painter. He supported the publication of the short-lived journal 'The Scottish Art Review' (1888). Between 1884 and 1905 he lived in Moniaive, Dumfriesshire with his wife. After this he moved to Edinburgh (1905), and became a prominent member of the Royal Scottish Academy. There are a number of works by him in the collection of the National Galleries of Scotland.
