Born Toddington, Gloucestershire. He was the son of Robert Castle (born c.1797 in Woodstock, Gloucestershire), a successful builder and architectural sculptor who operated a business from the Cowley Road and was employing seventeen men in 1851. James went on to become an architect and journalist living in Manchester and then Paddington, London.
