Born in London. He was the son of William Sounes (born c.1801 in Surrey, died in 1863) an engraver, medallist and die sinker. His younger brother Alfred Sounes (c.1838-83) was also a die sinker. Another older brother, William Henry Sounes (1830-73) trained as a die sinker and then went on to teach modelling. He was head of Sheffield School of Art between 1863 and 1872.

Probably William Sounes Senior (though possibly William Henry Sounes Junior) exhibited 'Impressions from dies (cut in steel) for stamping metals &c., intended for ornamental and other purposes' at the Great Exhibition of 1851 from the same address as James Sounes (catalogue, volume 2, class XXX, cat. no. 359, p. 842).
