Born in Langport, Somerset. He was the foreman modeller employed at the Palace of Westminster, engaged by John Thomas in 1842. His son, Charles Henry Mabey (born 1836) was also a highly successful architectural and monumental sculptor. James's grandson, Charles Henry Mabey Junior (born 1867) also continued the family business. into the 1930s.
