Born in Croydon. He was the son of Arthur Joseph Hungerford Pollen (1866–1937) expert on gunnery and businessman and the grandson of the decorative designer and curator Joseph Hungerford Pollen (1820-1902). In 1926 he married the Honorable Daphne Baring, daughter of Cecil Baring, 3rd Baron Revelstoke of Membland.
Pollen attended Downside School. In the 1920s he began exhibiting and was elected a member of the London Group in 1929. Pollen also exhibited with the New English Art Club and at the Royal Academy. He died in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire.
