Born in Portsmouth, Hampshire. She and two of her sisters, Lillian S and Rosie A Pettigrew (born in Portsmouth c. 1859 and c.1876 respectively), worked as artist's models in the early 1890s. They shared a house in Musgrove Crescent with their older sister Christine (born c.1860 in Plymouth, Devon) who kept house for her siblings. In 1901 Hettie was visiting a tailor and his wife in Fulham with her sister, Iris. A decade later Hettie was the head of household, living with he mother and her sisters Christine and Florence, evidently she was able to support her family.
