Born in Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Roscommon, Ireland. He moved to England sometime during the 1890s and settled in London. Morahan's children included the film maker Thomas Hugo Morahan. Another son, who shared his father's name, was active as a sculptor in the late 1930s (based on information in the Probate Calendar). This entry presents the known works exhibited under the name of 'Michael Joseph Morahan' in a single entry for the older artist. It is possible this is incorrect and some of the sculptures (particularly those exhibited from the late 1920s onwards) should be re-attributed to the son. However with the limited evidence available to the project this cannot be confirmed nor can an accurate division of the oeuvre be made.
