Born and raised in Airdrie, Lanarkshire. She was the daughter of Patrick McGeehan (born c.1845 in Airdrie), a carriage hirer. Aniza's given name was Annie L. McGeehan, presumably Aniza was a nickname or family name. Her older sister, Jessie M. McGeehan (born c.1873 in Airdrie) became a painter and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1901. Aniza married Vincent Murphy (born c.1871 in Liverpool), a timber importer but continued to exhibit under her maiden name.
