Sculptor
Born in Vrpolje, Croatia. Died in South Bend, Indiana. Trained in Split and at the Art Academy in Vienna. He travelled and exhibited widely in Europe before and during the First World War, including Paris, Belgrade, Rome, London and Switzerland. In the summer of 1915, the Victoria and Albert Museum held a large exhibition of his works which was one of their most successful exhibitions to date. There followed a number of other solo or group exhibitions in Britian with fellow Croatian sculptors. In 1919 a monograph edited by Milan Ćurčin was published in London further establishing his reputation. After 1930 the number of exhibitions of Mestrovic's work in Britain declined. He was invited to take up a chair at Syracuse University in 1946 and this led to a permanent move to the United States.
