Born in Edinburgh. He was the son of William Mossman Senior (1793-1851), a sculptor and marble cutter who was born in West Linton, Peebleshire and died in Glasgow. He then returned to Glasgow and after his father's death, became a partner with his older brother, John in the family firm J. and G. Mossman.
