Mackenzie was born in Scotland and studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1939. Her contemporaries included Ingeborg Neufeld who taught her to carve in wood. In 1946 Mackenzie married a New Zealander by the name of Priest, who was temporarily posted in Glasgow during the war, and emigrated with him in 1951 to Perth, Western Australia. Her work is held in the collection of the Art Gallery of Western Australia (Perth), and further examples (mostly painting, which she took up in later life) can be see at: http://www.holmesacourtgallery.com.au/exhibitions/current.cfm?exhibition_id=112. There is a monograph on her work by Philippa O'Brian 'Margaret Priest: an Artist's Life', Fremantle Press, Fremantle, WA, 2009
