Walton was part of a group known as the Glasgow Boys. He trained for a year in Dusseldorf and then studied at the Glasgow School of Art, but gained most experience working with his friends at Cockburnspath, Berwickshire and Cambuskenneth, Stirling. He specialised in landscapes and portraits. Walton worked in London between about 1894-1904 and then settled in Edinburgh. He was elected to the Royal Scottish Academy in 1905.
