Born in Bradford. Studied under William Staite Murray at the Royal College of Art between 1926-30. He then taught at the School of Art at High Wycombe, Berkshire before moving to Edinburgh where he was head of ceramics.
In 1933 Alick married Elsie Alberta Webber (1908-1994) who had been a fellow student at the Royal College of Art studying lettering and illumination under Professor Tristram. Elsie went on to become a highly respected teacher of art.
Alick served in the 51st Highland Division between 1941-47. After de-mobilisation he took a job running a small School of Art which was part of the old Wigan and District Mining and Technical College. Alick stayed there until his retirement in 1970.
