Sculptor
Born in Paris. He began his career as a goldsmith, later training under the sculptor, Francois-Joseph Bosio, the painter, Baron Antoine-Jean Gros and then at the École des Beaux Arts (from 1818). In 1823 whilst watching animals in the Jardin des Plantes he developed a keen interest in creating animal subjects. It was for this that he became famous.
