Born in London. She was the daughter of Winifred Joan Ophelia Gordon Bell, animal painter, and was married to William Heaton Cooper (1903-1995), the owner of the Heaton Cooper Gallery in Grasmere. Gordon Bell studied at Regent Street Polytechnic in the 1930s.
