Keith Godwin
Born 1916
Active: 1951 - 1955
Sculptor
He taught sculpture at Goldsmiths between about 1950-55 together with Harold Wilson Parker and Bobby Jones. Towards the end of his career, Godwin was Head of Sculpture at Manchester Polytechnic (previously Manchester College of Art). His son Christopher reports that his father pioneered the use of resins in sculpture, often using coloured Perspex embedded within the matrix.
In 1956 a statue by Godwin called 'Pastorale' was unveiled by Hugh Casson at Perkley Estate, Ham Common. There was some controversy surrounding the work and a short news film was made about it by Pathé. Godwin's works in bronze include a portrait head of Sir Alan Ayckbourn.
This entry includes information supplied by Keith Godwin and also by Andrew Potter, Royal Academy of Arts Library and by Margaret Langworth, a student at Goldsmiths. 'The Statue And The Fuss', 1956 is available online at http://www.britishpathe.com/video/the-statue-and-the-fuss (accessed 28 May 2013).
