Sculptor, silversmith, art metalworker, designer
Born in Birmingham, Warwickshire. He was educated at King Edward’s Grammar School and Birmingham School of Art, where he studied silversmithing. Stanton was also a painter of portraits, portrait miniatures and rustic subjects, often on a romantic, literary and historical theme.
He served a seven year apprenticeship with Elkington and Mason in 1847 (a card case that he designed for the firm is in the V&A collection). Stanton was sent to Florence from Birmingham to study Renaissance sculpture and metalwork. After completing his indentures he settled in Edinburgh (1855) and lived at 1 Ramsay Lane. Stanton sold very few artworks during his life and was continuously in debt. He was elected ARSA (Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy) in 1862 and RSA in 1885. His known works include statues of Friar Tuck, Rebecca and Sir Pierce Shafton for the Scott Monument; bronze panels on the Buccleuch Memorial, Royal Mile; and statues of ‘Army and Navy’ on the Albert Memorial in Charlotte Square, all Edinburgh. Stanton died in Edinburgh. He had a son, John G. Stanton (born in Edinburgh c.1864) who was a painter.
