Born Edinburgh. Apprenticed as estate wood-carver at Hospitalfield, Arbroath (where there are extensive archival records). Attended modelling classes at the Trustees Academy, Edinburgh. Trained in Rome at the end of the 1850s. His funerary works include a recumbent memorial to 'Mrs (?) Farington at St James, Leyland which Pevsner describes as 'uncommonly tender and not gushing'.
