Born in London. He was the son of the Scottish stone mason and sculptor, James Fillans (1808-52) who trained in Paris (1835) before settling in London. James Davidson Fillans seems to have been brought up in Scotland. (see 'Biographic and descriptive sketches of Glasgow necropolis' by George Blair, Glasgow, 1857)
