Sir William Reid Dick RA, HRSA, KCVO
Born 13 January 1878
Died 1 October 1961
Active: 1892 - 1961
Country of birth and death: Scotland
Sculptor, stonemason
Born in Glasgow. He was the son of Francis Dick (born c.1851) an engine fitter. William was apprenticed to the firm of stone masons, Scott and Rae aged 12 (c.1891). In 1892 Reid Dick worked on the carvings for Kelvingrove Art Gallery under the overall supervision of George Frampton. He attended evening classes in drawing at the Glasgow School of Art in 1899-1900 and in 1904-5. Reid Dick studied modelling in 1905-6 under Johan Keller (who had been an assistant of Francis Derwent Wood) and did a day life class in 1906-7. Phyllis Archibald (later Phyllis Clay) was in the same class. By 1907-8 Reid Dick had accepted a post teaching at Bell's Hill Academy but within a year had moved to London. Here he continued his studies by taking evening classes at South London Technical School of Art whilst working for the sculptor Edwin Whitney-Smith.
Reid Dick quickly achieved recognition, becoming an associate of the Royal Society of British Sculptors in 1915. After war service in France and Palestine from 1915-19 his career developed still more rapidly. Reid Dick designed numerous war memorials and received a major commission for the Kitchener Memorial Chapel (1922-5) in St Paul's Cathedral, London. The focal point of his design for the chapel was a Pièta, which won a gold medal at the Paris International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in 1925. This work secured his reputation and election to the Royal Academy.
Throughout his career, Reid Dick worked tirelessly both in the studio and serving on numerous committees, among these the Royal Fine Art Commission (1928-42), the Royal Mint Advisory Committee (1936-53), and the Board of Trustees of the Tate Gallery (1934-41). In addition he was President of the Royal Society of British Sculptors between 1933-37. He was knighted in 1935, made King's Sculptor-in-Ordinary for Scotland in 1938, and Queen's Sculptor in 1952.
'William Reid Dick, Sculptor' by Dennis Wardleworth (Ashgate, Farnham, 2013) provides a detailed study of Reid Dick's career and work.
Wealth at death: £24,265 2s. 5d.
Probate date: 19 April 1962
