Born in Paddington, London. He was the son of William Henry Course (born c.1866 in London), an art lead worker. His older brother Sidney Langham Course (born c.1896) worked as a moulder in a brass foundry around 1911. John served in the First World War and then studied at the Royal Academy Schools where he won the Landseer Scholarship (1923).
