Sculptor
Born in Hampshire. Died in Buckinghamshire. Julian Allan served in the army in both world wars, leaving with the rank of colonel. In the early 1920s she studied at the Royal Academy Schools. Allan was awarded the Gold Medal in 1925 and then travelled in Europe. She changed her name from Eva to Julian when she started sculpting professionally as she felt that her work was taken more seriously when attributed to a man's name. Works by Julian Allan can be seen in England and Scotland and include a huge crucifix in Paisley, a Madonna and Child in Wetherby Carmelite Monastery, Mrs Pankhurst's tombstone in London and a portrait of Kathleen Ferrier in the Free Trade Hall in Manchester, as well as works in various convents and monasteries, and many memorial bronzes. Amongst the portraits she executed was a head of Mrs Marjorie Dunlop (née Richardson) a Downe House alumna, who was married to Sir Derrick Melville Dunlop, the Professor of Therapeutics and Clinical Medicine at Edinbugh University.
There is an altar relief in the Chapel at Downe House School sculpted by Julian Allan. This comprises three sections: the Raising of Jairus's daughter, the Madonna and Child, and the Supper at Emmaus. The centre panel shows the Christ Child on the altar symbolising Christ's sacrifice to mankind, and Joseph at Mary's feet; the figure beneath Joseph represents the world and the angel's hands express sorrow. There are three sheep facing one way, and a lone sheep facing the other representing independence and choice - a theme dear to Julian Allan's heart as she was an independent and determined person with a strong religious conviction. The altar was commissioned in 1932 by one of the school's alumnae in remembrance of her father who was a great friend and supporter of the school.
This record includes information submitted by Anna Renton-Green, Head of Alumnae Relations, Downe House School.
