Sculptor
Born in Carlisle, Cumberland. He was related to Thomas Nelson (1807-90) and James Nelson of Carlisle, owners of the Carlisle Marble Works. George became an assistant to Musgrave Watson, whose memorial he made for Carlisle Cathedral. He enrolled at the Royal Academy Schools in the late 1830s or early 1840s and won two prizes for his work. Nelson retained links with his native Cumbria, where he executed a number of memorials and monuments, whilst basing his career in London.
