Born in Sale, Cheshire. Chettle had a cotton business in Manchester buying and selling cotton and fabric. He exhibited chiefly at the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts and Royal Society of British Artists (RBA). Chettle was elected to the RBA in 1935 and later served as President of that Society. Among his friends was the painter, L.S. Lowry.
