Mary Hastie
Born 1851
Died 1932
Active: 1908 - 1932
Country of birth and death: England
Sculptor, miniaturist, painter
She was born in Late February or early March 1851 in North Wooler, Northumberland. Her father was William Hastie (born 1823), a slater. Mary spent part of her early childhood in Australia (1852-7) but lived most of her life in Northumberland in the Newcastle area. Around 1891 she was housekeeper to her older brothers but by 1901 had become an artist and art school teacher. Her mother's unmarried sister, Jane Cox was a teacher which may have encouraged Mary to follow in her footsteps. From 1908 Hastie exhibited regularly until her death in 1932.
