Born in London. The son of the distinguished mathematician, Augustus de Morgan. Originally trained as a painter at the Royal Academy Schools, he met William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones in the 1860s and turned to making tiles and designing stained glass.
In 1873 he started a pottery in Orange House, Great Cheyne Row, later relocating this to Merton Abbey, South London and then Fulham. The company was wound up in 1907, but he continued to work as a novelist on the encouragement of his wife, Evelyn Pickering who he had married in 1887. He died at home.
