Born in St Pancras, London between October and December 1874. Son of William Grimwood (born c.1847 in St Pancras, London), wood carver and teacher. His younger brother, Sidney A. Grimwood (born c.1878 in St Pancras, London), was a gold and silversmith.
Herbert trained at the School of Art Wood Carving in South Kensington where his father was a teacher. From 1900 Herbert was also a part-time teacher of evening classes at the School, and in 1904 he was appointed Principal. Between c.1900-37 Herbert was also running a business, which was based in the St Pancras area. He published 'An introduction to decorative woodwork for the use of schools' with Frederick Goodyear (University of London press, 1936). Grimwood died in Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.
