Born in Marylebone, London, he was baptised on 17 January 1816. He was the son of Edward William Physick (c.1774-1862) and brother to Charles (born 1810) and Edward Gustavus (1802-75). Robert entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1837 where he won a silver medal in 1840. He had two sons, Robert Physick (born c. 1841) who became a painter and William Physick (born c.1843) who became a sculptor. In the Census Returns of 1871 his name is given as Thomas although it is clear from the name of his spouse and children that this is Robert. He died between July and September 1882 in St Pancras, London.
