Sculptor, architectural sculptor
Born in Berry Brow Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. He was the son of John Kitson, a tailor. His older brother was John William Kitson (1845-88) an architectural sculptor who was the first of the family to move to the USA and his younger brother was Henry Hudson Kitson (c.1863-1945) who was also a sculptor. Another brother was Robert Lewellyn Kitson (no dates) a water colour painter who is also said to have lived in America. Samuel James studied in Rome from about 1870 to 1874 and then set up a studio in Italy. He exhibited in London and maintained a studio in Rome until 1880 but was also in the process of moving permanently to the USA in the late 1870s. There is quite a lot of information about the Kitson family and Samuel James's career available online including an entry in Wikipedia written by a descendant http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_James_Kitson (accessed 15 December 2013).
