Born in Regensberg. Wagmuller studied in Munich at the industrial school under Anselm Sickinger (1807–73) and then at the academy of fine arts with Professor Max von Widnmann (1812-95). Between 1868-c.1872 Wagmuller worked in London where he completed a number of commissions and exhibited at the Royal Academy. After returning to Munich he was appointed Professor at the Akademie der bildenden Künste, an appointment he held until his death in 1881. Wagmuller's students in Munich included Edward Onslow Ford and Edwin Roscoe Mullins.
