Born in Bolton-le-Moors, Lancashire. He may have been the son of James Rothwell, cotton carder (born c.1807, probably in Bolton) living in Bolton-le-Moors in 1851. Thomas embarked on a career as a landscape painter and then became a wood carver and art metal worker.
