Born in Sheffield, Yorkshire. He was the son of Edwin Smith (born c.1811 in Sheffield, Yorkshire), the owner of the Sheffield Ornamental Metal and Marble Working company which employed six men c.1851 and fifteen men and five boys c.1861. By the latter date Theophilus was a partner in the family business. On 22 February 1879 the partnership was dissolved, prior to Theohphilus filing for the liquidation of his business and assets. He died, probably in 1882, based on information in his father's will. An undated carte de visite describes him as a 'Sculptor, Ornamental Designer and Photographer'.
