Born in Hull, Yorkshire into an extended family of sculptors and masons. Of these, Thomas was the most successful and the only one to establish a career in London.
He was initially apprenticed to his father, George Earle Senior (1748-1827) who was stonemason, architect and speculative builder. Thomas also studied at the local Mechanics' Institute.
He left Hull c.1830-1 and worked as a designer and modeller for Francis Chantrey until c.1842. From December 1832 Thomas studied at the Royal Academy Schools on the recommendation of Chantrey.
By 1851 he had set up his own studio and established a successful practice, chiefly as a maker of portrait busts. For example the Leathersellers' Company commissioned a marble bust of Richard Thornton (1776-1865), the millionaire merchant and marine insurance broker. However Earle also completed a number of statues and monuments as well as ideal works. He died suddenly in 1876 and was buried in Hull.
