Sculptor
Cawthra was born in Shipley, Yorkshire. He was a wood carver's apprentice (c.1901) and then an uncertified teacher (c.1911). He studied at Salts Art School in Shipley, the Leeds School of Art, the Royal College of Art and the Royal Academy Schools.
After the First World War he received a number of commissions for war memorials including: the bronze panels on the Bury War Memorial, Lancashire (unveiled 1924); the War Memorial at Bootle, Lancashire; and St. John on the memorial at Hackney Churchyard Gardens, Lower Clapton, Essex. Among his other major commissions are: the Earl of Meath Memorial at Lancaster Gate, Hyde Park, 1934; a statuary group for the Burns Mausoleum in Dumfries, Scotland; the 'Mother and Child' in Bishop’s Park, Hammersmith, London; and relief work on Sadler’s Wells Theatre, Islington.
