Miss Mary Jane Johnson
Born 26 October 1857 (Circa)
Died 1942 (Presumed)
Active: 1891 - 1939
Country of birth and death: Great Britain
Wood carver, teacher of woodcarving, art teacher
Born in Douglas, Isle of Man. She was the daughter of William Coxon Johnson (born c.1823 in England), hotel proprietor. Mary moved to Leeds by 1881 and remained living there until at least 1911. (There seem to have been family connections to Yorkshire via her father but these are unconfirmed.) Sometime over the next twenty years she trained as a wood carver and it is possible she is the Mary J. Johnson who published 'The "Simplex" Series of elementary Wood Carving Lessons' with 6 plates, Philip, Son & Nephew, Liverpool, 1899. Certainly by 1901 she was teaching art and wood carving and continued to do so until her retirement (based on the entry in the 1939 Register). In 1904 Johnson exhibited work at the Arts and Crafts Exhibition at Leeds City Art Gallery. In 1939 she was living with her older sister, Emily Johnson, in Leeds. Her death is presumed to have been 1942 but this is not yet confirmed.
