Born in Leeds. She was the daughter of (William) Gilbert Foster RBA, artist 1855-1906. Married first in 1903 to (Henry) Reginald Hirst (1876-1936, born in Batley), a director of a woollen cloth mill. After her first marriage ended in 1924 she married William Bell (1881-c.1970), who was born in Westerkirk, Dumfriesshire. He was an architect and practiced in Dundee, Wakefield and the south of England before retiring to Kirkcudbright. William was also a painter and an author of several books of reminiscences. His friends included the sculptor and critic, Vernon Blake and the poet and author, Siegfried Sassoon.
