Born in West Derby, Lancashire. He was the son of Richard Rathbone, a Liverpool merchant. He trained with W. A. S. Benson in London who was a family relative. Richard set up a workshop c.1890 and continued production until the early 1900s when he became head of the Sir John Cass Institute in London. He was made an Honorary member of Sandon Studio Society in Liverpool in 1908 and was Chairman of the London County Council Consultative Committee on silversmithing.
