Born in Belgium. No details of his early training are currently known, but he had arrived in Britain before 1872 based on the date of works exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts. Around 1872 he was living or working at the same address as Joseph de Bruyn (12 Stanley Place in Pimlico), which was later associated with E. Constant Vinoelst (all Belgian sculptors). All three artists are also linked to 178 Buckingham Palace Road.
