Born in Liverpool. Son of Phillip Rathbone (born c.1824 in Liverpool), an insurance broker. The Rathbones were one of Liverpool's pre-eminent Liberal families and were noted philanthropists. They played a key role in the cultural life of the city, such as contributing generously to the foundation of the University of Liverpool. Harold was married to Alice Maud (n�e Whitehead, born c.1880 in Leeds, Yorkshire), who was also an artist.
