Born in London. She was the daughter of Crucifix Canton (born c.1823 in London), a dentist and surgeon. Susan studied at the Royal Academy Schools where she was awarded a silver medal for design in 1881. Canton was subsequently active as a sculptor and painter for the next four decades.
She participated in the annual exhibitions of the Society of Women artists in 1895, 1896, 1903, and 1909. Between 1880 and 1920 she also exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Miniature Society, and Bruton Galleries in London; the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool; Leeds City Art Gallery; Nottingham Castle Museum; and at Manchester City art Gallery.
Canton was the author of 'The Meaning of a Dream' in 'Occult Review' volume 22, December 1915 (p.368)
