Sculptor
Born in Iseo, Ticino, Switzerland of an Italian father, Gaetano Monti (1776-1847) a sculptor from Ravenna who was a pupil of Bertel Thorvaldsen. He studied in his father's studio and at the Accademia de Belle Arti di Brera, Milan under the sculptor Pempeo Marchesi.
In 1848 he fled to London from Italy after the Italian insurgents were defeated by the Austrian army at Custozza. Raffaele was involved with the Crystal Palace Company (c1853) and then worked with Joseph Paxton on the great Hall at Mentmore, home of the Rothschilds. He created a number of other commissions and also designed for Elkington's and Garrards. However his financial situation remained precarious and he died in London in poverty.
