Sculptor, teacher
Born in St. Clement Danes, London. His younger brother was the architect, Charles William Callcott (born 1864). In the spring of 1912 Frederick married the sculptor, Florence Newman. Callcott exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts (1878-1921), the Liverpool Autumn Exhibition, the Royal Society of British Artists and at the Paris Salon (1898). In 1899 a his Memorial to the Surf Boat Disaster of 1897 was unveiled on Marine Terrace, Margate (cast by Elkington's). Between 1904 and his death in 1923, Callcott contributed a series of relief sculptures (copper reliefs on a background of coloured marble, some with mother-of pearl detail) to the Black Friar public house, on the corner of Queen Victoria and New Bridge Streets in the City of London (architect H. Fuller Clark). After Callcott's death the scheme was completed by Henry Poole. Another sculptural scheme on a public house is attributed to Callcott, these are two identical low relief plaster panels above the two entrances to The Jolly Garners at 49 Black Prince Road, Lambeth, London (architect Robert Alexander Lewcock (1846-1932).
The memorial at Margate has a Grade II listing and full details can be found at http://list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1391528 (accessed 21 February 2014).
