Born in Dublin, Ireland. He was the son of William Bruce Joy (6 September 1800-28 January 1885, born in Ireland, died in London) a physician and member of the Royal College of Physicians, Ireland and of Arminella (Vance, born c.1814, Ireland died 28 March 1888, London). Aged nine Albert was sent to a school run by Dr Becker, author of Becker's grammar in Offenbach, Germany, and was later a student at King's College, London, and in Paris. He trained in art at the South Kensington Schools, Royal Academy Schools and worked as an assistant to John Henry Foley. Bruce Joy died at Shottermill,near Haslemere, in Surrey.
