Ludwig Cauer

Sculptor
Born and died in Bad Kreuznach. He was the son of Carl Cauer, sculptor and grandson of Emil Cauer the Elder (1800 -67). Emil was the first sculptor in the family, who trained in Berlin and then became curator of the antiquities collection in Dresden in 1832. Emil then moved to Bad Kreuznach and established a successful practice as the maker of statues of historical figures. Ludwig's brothers Emil, Robert and Hugo were also sculptors.
Ludwig received his initial training from his father and then studied in Rome and Berlin. From about 1891-3 he lived in London and returned to Germany. Ludwig received a number of major public commissions resulting in him being elected to the German Academy in 1916. From 1918 he returned to Bad Kreuznach and worked principally as a funerary sculptor.
